Colorado, The Centennial State

Yesterday, we settled in comfortably for a 2-night stay in the beautiful Riverview RV Park along the Big Thompson River just outside Loveland, Colorado. Snow-covered Rockies and Devils Backbone were in view as we looked around the area.  Today, we set out from Loveland through Big Thompson Canyon to Estes Park where we had a delicious brunch at "The Egg and I" cafe.  With full tummies, we entered Roosevelt National Forest and the Rocky Mountain National Park where Larry bought his lifetime park pass. Immediately upon entering the park, it was like someone "turned on" the beauty! The snow was so pristine under the Douglas firs, pines, and dense groves of aspen. The great meadows were only broken by flowing streams and beautiful ponds - frozen in some areas. We saw deer, elk, wild turkey, sheep, ducks and a black long-tailed bird we couldn't identify. The roads were winding with sheer rock cliffs on one side and meadows or beautiful drop-offs on the other. We ranged in elevation (according to the GPS) from approximately 6,000 to a majestic 9,424 feet. Simply breathtaking views of the peaks and valleys had us craning our necks on the drive or standing with our mouths open when stopped. We hiked in the snow at beautiful Sprague Lake where a bride was being photographed on the foot bridge. And, we played in the snow - hopping through it's deep, soft drifts and laughing when our shoes and socks got wet! Then, we made our way to Bear Lake and drove the loop past Aspenglen, Fall River, West Horseshoe Park, Deer Ridge, and Beaver Meadows. Highway 34 was not open yet all the way through the park but giant snowplows were busy making way for the full summer season to open around the Memorial Day Holiday.   On the drive back to the RV Park we saw  "The Colorado Cherry Company" and stopped in for a tasting!  We left smacking our lips and packing a bag filled with jarred jellies including cherry butter!
A day to remember -

Connecting with friends and family....

Yesterday was a travel day and I had lots of time to reflect on the past few weeks with family.   As we prepared for our trip north this summer to camp-host at Yellowstone Holiday RV Resort in Montana, we spent as much special time with our children and precious grandson, Adler as we could.  There were pop-in visits, dinners out, and time at the playgrounds.  I think my favorite day was at Surfside Beach with Adler - a day spent looking at things from his perspective.  Every moment an adventure for him - and in turn, for us!  Skype and FaceTime will surely get a work-out as we keep in touch with Sara, Justin, Adler, & Mac - and our friends too!

So, we set out to cross Texas with a stop at Liz's and then connecting with John and Debbie to travel together to the Lubbock area.  We spent time visiting friends and Larry's family.  His Dad will be 93 this summer.  What a wonderful time we had with everyone!  Lots of children to play with, make cookies with and hug - lots of hugs!  And there were new babies too!  Sweet babies!

We enjoyed dinners and lunches, great home-cooked meals, the gun & knife show, and a comedy night at a local winery.  New tires for the truck and a Texas inspection sticker and we're ready to hit the road.  Just before leaving Texas, we were able to stop off for the night at Larry's cousin's home near Amarillo and enjoyed a nice visit.  Good thing we stopped as the wind was horrendous and played havoc on our fuel mileage!

Thanks for putting up with us, everyone!  You are all so wonderful and we enjoyed every minute with you!

See you "out there!"

Darla, Oz, and I...

I saw "Oz, The Great and Powerful" with Darla on Saturday at my favorite movie house - Star Cinema Grill.  The movie had varied reviews so I didn't know what to expect.  It is a long movie (2 hrs, 7 min.) so no giant cola for me, thank you!  I really did enjoy it and I especially liked James Franco who portrayed the character, Oz.  Though, not a remake of the original "Wizard of Oz" movie, it brought close the things I loved about it - the poppy field, Munchkins, and witches.  The cinematography and graphics were neat - lots of action!  And, of course, smoke and mirrors.

It goes without saying... but I'll say it anyway... time with Darla is always fun!  We asked someone to snap our photo in the huge red-carpeted entrance filled with giant artwork of movie stars-

Dinner and Laughter with Jody & David

Enjoyed a delicious dinner with Jody and David on Wednesday night.  We managed to keep the restaurant staff busy (and probably a little entertained) as we each shared our trip stories and jokes.  We will be looking forward to spending time together this summer when they take their own trip to Yellowstone!
See you - Out There With Lea & Larry!

Junior's in a bind...

This is how it all started.  Curiosity - not minding your Mama.

It is one of our better days, weather wise - sunny and not quite so humid.  Junior and I, along with Betsy, Ms. Aggie and the herd, start down the fence-line trail to the big house. The air is crisp and the hum-click from the electrical towers that dissect the pasture mark the rhythm of our steps.

Junior's Daddy has taken the lead in hopes of being first to reach the big hay ring set out by Old Man Booth.

Even though it's a big open pasture, we always go single file in an orderly fashion, keeping to the path. Except for a young bull-calf or two who briefly venture off to explore.

"Lola," Betsy said, "Junior's hanging with the older calves - aren't you concerned?" "Not really, He's just like his Daddy - with a mind of his own and pretty good with a problem.  Why, just the other day he encountered a fire ant bed and it didn't take many bites for him to decide to leave it alone," Lola laughed.

Betsy, enjoying girl-conversation for a change (and a welcome break from her little one), decided to-heck with single file. She fell into step beside Lola and they went along talking about the joys of motherhood and the pain of their milk letting down.

The rest of the morning is spent contentedly munching hay.  Junior and the other calves clumsily fight for a spot at the fence where Melissa and her grand kids have gathered. The kids poke in a bottle filled with sweet-milk and argue over who gets to hold it first. Junior's pushiness pays off when he lunges for the big rubber nipple and he comes away with an adorable milk moustache.

At last, the afternoon sun is hot and our instincts tell us to head for shade. We make our way to the tree line, coaxing Junior and his playmates away from the giggling curly-headed kids.  "Stay close now, Junior."

Plod, plod, hum-click, plod, plod, hum-click.
Plod, plod, hum-click, plod, plod, hum-click.
Plod, plod, hum-click, plod, plod, hum-click.

"I just turned my back for a second!"  Lola is frantic -

Junior has squeezed into the neighbor's pasture - separated from her and the herd.

Junior is in a bind.

Adler At The Beach!

"What's this, Mimi?"
"It's a crab's home, Adler, see how much work the Momma crab did to dig all of this sand out?
"Oh! I fix it."

Scoop, scoop went the sand - back into the hole.  Stomp, stomp went little feet to pack it....

"Mimi hopes the crab home has a back door, Adler."
"Where's the back door, Mimi? I wanna see the back door."

Pretend you're a 3 year old and enjoy the beach with Adler.
